Creating Error Free, Smooth Webcast Streams

Virtual concerts and corporate virtual meetings are a new trend around the world. We recently produced a virtual concert for The Chacons, a brother and sister duo based in Arizona.

At Spectrum Video, we noticed virtual concerts and even television networks haven’t mastered creating an error free, smooth streamed broadcast.

Everyone is using Zoom and Skype to broadcast from home and beyond. Viewers can notice the quality of a bad stream. This can happen in virtual meetings and television programs. Video and audio seem to often cut out, which can be very distracting.

Viewers tend to get  disappointed because poor quality of the broadcast or virtual event can ruin the entire message.

Intermittent technical issues with webcast streaming is very distracting.

These issues can be mitigated with the right equipment.

To create an error free, smooth virtual concert for The Chacons, the LiveU Solo SDI/ HDMI video recorder was the best choice for Spectrum Video & Film. This device is a plug-and-play, end-to-end live video streaming solution that keeps more viewers engaged with a reliable stream. This device helps decrease the intermittent issues viewers see on virtual webcasts on Zoom, Skype, etc. This device incorporates a very unique transmission method LRT (LiveU Reliable Transport) which guarantees consistent and high-quality live streaming.

This live streaming solution supports a one-touch integration with many popular social media sites.

The Spectrum team also set up a three-camera production for the duo, including a Tricaster mini switcher. One camera was placed on a Rhino slider with a pan head, which provided a left to right pan while they were jamming.

A Chauvet Pro controlled lighting board was used to give some colored lighting effects, which included moving lights above.

One camera operator was designated for panning, zooming and tilting during the virtual concert.

We also shot pre-produced interviews for the artists which gave us time to change the look and feel of the set during video playback.

We also placed a hazer in the corner to create a different set look.

In addition, during the virtual concert, the artists could interact with viewers through chat with a laptop positioned for them to see as the concert was streamed on Facebook, Vimeo and YouTube.

Special thanks to The Chacons for the great musical performance. And, a shout out to the Spectrum team for handling the 20 plus creative positions with just a four-person crew, and two very fun days!

4 Tips for Editing a Live Corporate Event Video

4 Tips for Editing a Live Corporate Event

When on location covering a corporate function that needs on-site editing for playback during the event, these editing tips will help you achieve the results you want.

1.   The Introduction Shot

The opening footage need to be captivating to draw the audience in and hold their interest. Open the video with coverage of participants enjoying the activities – showing the faces of the attendees will engage everyone. Get creative with the footage – with effects or speed of shots.

2.   Determine the Length

Know your audience and pre-determine the length of the video. Include only short, compelling sound bites of the event’s speakers and funny, engaging moments of the participants.

Make sure you everything you add to the final cut is attention-grabbing. Remember, ust because it happened, doesn’t mean it has to be included.

3.   Include Faces

When you add close-ups and mid-shots of people to the video, you make the overall experience more personal. And, the more attractive you make these shots ; the more likely people will remember your video.

Another advantage is  people are more likely to share your video if they spot someone they know. Or, even better, if they themselves are in the video.

4.   Find the Right Music

The music should complement your video without overpowering it. But don’t go for something generic, that holds the same pace and tone throughout. Pick music that has multiple layers and changes rhythm so that you can have fun with the edit. And, edit to the beat, which makes a subtle but effective difference in how a video is perceived.

Conclusion

Do what looks good to the eyes, and play around with clips and music to edit a piece that your audience will remember and want to share..

The Just in Case Teleprompter

Always looking for ways to streamline production, the Spectrum Video team fabricated the Just in Case teleprompter, which is lightweight and easy to set up.

Basically, in the time it takes to start your laptop, the Just in Case is set up and ready to go.

Just in Case is compact and great for traveling to on-location video productions.

Here’s all we need, the prompter case, C-stand with pin, laptop, AC plug and HDMI cable.

Simply place the prompter case on the C-stand.

Open the Pelican type case and raise the built-in side flaps. The teleprompter glass is built in the lid.

Then, raise the flaps where the camera goes.

Plug in the HDMI or VGA cable and power cord.

Place the camera on the rear side of the teleprompter.

On-camera talent can look directly at the camera instead of above, below, left or right of camera. And, the talent doesn’t see the camera, which can help put them at ease.

Spectrum uses a Mac laptop and went to the App Store and found several types of teleprompter software and picked one that suited our needs.

5 Tips to Secure a Video Production Internship

Getting a video production internship or entry-level job requires hard work and determination.

The video production industry is becoming crowded due to the fast-paced clip of changing technology and an enthusiastic interest by young talent. So how can new talent get the experience needed to secure that first video production internship or job? Here are some tips:

Meet Decision Makers

  • Apply for entry-level jobs or an internship at a video production company. This will allow you access to decision makers and industry insiders who can then help you secure a position.
  • And, don’t be shy when you get the chance to be on location with potential employers. Make yourself useful – unloading equipment or getting coffee. This will help develop your confidence and show future employers you’re eager to learn from the bottom up. The more you do, the more you can then add to your resume.

Show Your Work

  • As soon as you have quality work to show, create a reel or sample page to share with prospective employers. Your work doesn’t have to have been aired or published, it needs to represent your talents.

Find a Mentor

  • Don’t be afraid to ask a video production professional – the company owner, director of photography or video editor – to mentor you, as seasoned professionals welcome the chance to share their expertise.

Reach Out

  • Keep the video production professionals you work with in the loop. Update them on projects you’re working on, the status of your education and availability to assist on future projects.
